Activities for the Kids Thru New Years

By Lily Iatridis  January 24, 2001
Kids Santa Hats2During the next week or two, you're likely to have a lot of extra people underfoot with folks visiting and family members off work.

Well here's a few fun things to do with all the kids -- they practice writing, vocabulary building, and get the kids off of their electronic devices.

1) Write new lyrics to their favorite Christmas Carols. Do your kids come home and sing new versions of "Jingle Bells" to you? There's little more that amuses our youngest right now than making up new words to Christmas carols with his friends. New lyrics can be about family members or highlights of the year.

2) Letters to Santa. If they haven't written their letters to Santa yet, anytime before Xmas day will work! It's a perfect opportunity to get your kids to practice persuasive writing by explaining all the reasons why they should be on Santa's "nice" list this year.

3) Learning all the lyrics to "Auld Lang Syne" to sing on New Years'. What do those words really mean? Do you all stumble your way through the song every year like we do? Click on this Wikipedia link to research the original Scottish poem and learn all the words so everyone can bring the new year in with gusto.

4) Riddle writing. A non-electronic, multi-generational family favorite is riddle contests. Have kids prepare to win by writing their own riddles! Visit http://www.poetry4kids.com/blog/news/writing-riddles/ for clear and simple directions to create riddles of their own.
