Writing Prompts for the Dog Days of Summer

By Lily Iatridis  July 16, 2015

_ EMAIL Writing Prompts for the Dog Days of Summer“Summer afternoon, summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” ~ Henry James

Are you enjoying your summer afternoons?

Well, here’s a list of writing prompts to keep up the kids’ practice and give them something to do during these sultry days of summer.

To add depth and challenge to these prompts, have the kids share their answers and ask them to add examples and descriptions.

On the other hand, if they’re reluctant writers, ask them to write their answers on one of the graphic organizers from our End Blank Page Terror ebook. (If you missed last week’s email, it’s free.)

Here you go!

1) Describe your favorite day so far this summer. What did you do and who were you with?

2) What’s the best family trip you’ve ever taken and why?

3) Write about a trip you took recently. What were your favorite things about it, and what would you do differently if you were in charge of planning the next one?

4) If you went to a camp, write a letter to your family as if you were still there, especially if it was a sleep away camp. What did you learn from your experience?

5) Other than the weather, how does the summer season differ from other times of the year for you?

6) Create a list of things you want to accomplish before summer’s end.

7) If you had a paying job this summer, write about it. What did you like, and what would you like to change?

8) What’s your ideal summer job and why?

9) What’s your favorite book you’ve read so far this summer and why? In a couple of sentences, give a brief description of the book.

10) Take a look at the photos from the Pluto flyby that were released this week on NASA’s website. Why does our government invest in space exploration? What’s your opinion on the subject?

Have summer prompts of your own that your kids do well with? Please share them in the comments below.
