Writing With A New Twist Bucket Lists

By Lily Iatridis  August 28, 2014

Now that it's back to school season for so many of us, we're busy setting learning goals for all our kids. I don't know about you, but the term "goal setting" makes me feel like somebody just put a 40 pound weight across the back of my shoulders. Yet it must be done.

So make time for some fun goal setting too. Take a break from the school planning and do some fun planning with your kids. This is a pleasant way to use your imaginations, be creative.... and practice writing at the same time!

The writing activity I describe in this week's video is called a "bucket list" because it's different and humorous, but you can give it whatever title you want. A lot of folks like "vision boards," which is basically the same thing using pictures instead of words.

The truth is, a catchy name or a new perspective on a traditional activity makes it fresh and engaging for your kids with no extra work for you.

As always, work in some critical thinking skills practice by asking your kids to write or tell you why they chose the things they put on their lists. Older kids can write paragraphs explaining their choices, while little ones can use a combination of pictures and words or sentences.

In the video below I give some content ideas and explain why to limit their bucket lists to five year periods. Please click on the image link below and take a minute to watch!
