Easy Engaging Thanksgiving Writing

BLOG- fall holiday

Need an easy and engaging writing activity for your kids while you're cooking, cleaning or travelling for the holiday?

If you’re a busy parent here in the U.S., you’re probably trying to work through your normal daily routine while preparing for a large Thanksgiving feast, having the entire family at home for four full days, and receiving visits from friends and extended family.

Well, if you want to keep up your kids writing practice, why not begin with a simple holiday writing prompt?

For example, you can ask them to list what they're thankful for this holiday. That's very easy. But then, have them write why they're thankful for each item on their list. That shouldn't be difficult for them, but it's actually where the exercise becomes a challenge. Answering the "why" requires critical thinking, clarity and specific answers.

Remember, in our teaching method, when it comes to journal writing, free writing is the rule. That means that they only have to think, write about their ideas fully and ignore grammar rules for the time being. When everybody's distracted and excited on the cusp of a holiday, focusing on one goal and making it as fun as possible is the key to productive teaching.

Motivate your kids and pull more out of them for this activity by inviting them to turn it into a toast they'll give at the holiday dinner. Make it more fun by having them work on it together with friends or siblings of varying ages.  New traditions can be made!
