Make Grammar Fun with No Red Ink

By Lily Iatridis  January 1, 2001

Blog- No Red InkIs it really possible to make grammar lessons fun? Whether you're a student or a teacher, grammar is necessary but usually very boring. After hunting down and testing grammar applications for the ipad and iphone yesterday, I happily discovered No Red Ink. This program was developed by a teacher who’s graded tens of thousands of student papers “in red ink.” He never had a system in place to be able to easily track his students’ grammar practice and improvement, so he created No Red Ink. But that's certainly not what really makes it interesting.

Once you create a free account, No Red Ink directs you to pick your interests, including choices in types of sports, t.v. shows, movies, music, friends, pets, and so on. Later, when you choose a grammar lesson to work on, all of the exercises and quiz questions are in the context of your interests. For example, I chose Harry Potter movies. When I did a grammar lesson, every question referred to something out of the Harry Potter books. What fun!  Answering grammar questions about Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry sure beat the drudgery of routine grammar practice.

No Red Ink also provides differentiated instruction. The program adjusts questions based on what students get right or wrong and drills down to find common errors or basic misunderstandings. When learners get stuck, No Red Ink shows them tutorials to help them correct their mistakes and keep going.

By the way, this app is also FREE. Sign up now and give it a try! I know I’ll be directing my students who need grammar practice to the site for quite some time.
