Get Kids to Write with J.K. Rowling's Pottermore

By Lily Iatridis  January 1, 2001

Blog- PottermoreDo you wish you had more Harry Potter books to read?

Not long ago, when I was teaching 8th graders in a private brick-and-mortar school, I found a group of my students huddled in a circle in the school common room. Their laptops were open and they were whispering excitedly as they looked onscreen. I wondered what they were up to. All the social media channels at the school were blocked! Did they find a “back door” in? Hmmm. I crept up behind them quietly, and caught them off guard as I asked, “What are you doing?” To my surprise, instead of quickly switching screens, they turned their laptops around to let me see.

My students were putting together writing submissions for Pottermore, J.K. Rowling’s official site whose purpose is to continue the adventure for Harry Potter fans. If you join (for free), you become a character in the Hogwarts community. You travel through and interact with all of the Harry Potter stories online, collecting points, playing games and so on. There’s a blog community that celebrates things like Dobby’s birthday, inviting kids to make submissions of drawings and such on a regular basis. Not only that, but for each chapter in all of the books there is previously unpublished commentary from J.K. Rowling herself. She shares her inspiration for the characters, plot and settings of each book in the series.

So if you wish you had more Harry Potter news and details to read, visiting Pottermore is a must.
