Election Year Resources For Your Homeschool

Local elections took place last week! Did your candidates win?

Whether your family is politically active or not, kids should know about their right to vote and how elections work.

After all, teens will have to make their own choices when they come of age in only a few short years!

ElectionsUsing the sources below, you can teach your kids all they need to know about elections past and present.

and revisit these sources regularly over the next year as the U.S. Presidential campaign heats up!

1) For current news updates, visit Student News Daily. Student News Daily is a non-profit website for high school students whose goal is to build knowledge of current events and strengthen critical thinking skills. This is an excellent place for your kids to learn about the 2016 Presidential candidates and keep in touch with new developments in the campaign.

Every article is followed by lots of activities that practice critical thinking and writing skills. The language is easy to follow, and daily news updates are available.

In other words, you don’t have to prepare anything!

2) Study a history of elections in the U.S. via the Library of Congress site, Elections the American Way. This site tells how the first Presidential election came about, gives interesting histories of notable U.S elections, and gives a comprehensive history of U.S. elections.

3) Lastly, visit the National Archives site How the Electoral College Works to learn the unique way the U.S. President is elected and why. The Electoral College is the method used for U.S. Presidential elections.


A Presidential election year is a perfect time to teach your kids the election and campaign process. Don’t miss out on this fantastic educational opportunity!
